The property (which is the owners' holiday home) lies 3km from Villefranche du Perigord, a bastide (fortified medieval) town dating from the 13th century boasting a covered market, square, and all facilities for shopping including 3 food shops, a delicatessen, 2 bakeries, 2 butchers, a hardware store and a tabac which sells English-language newspapers. It also has a tennis court, a boules court, a swimming pool, fishing and in the season a cinema with some English language films.
There are many activities locally including golf, canoeing, walking, horse riding, hot air ballooning, tennis, boules and fishing. The Dordogne river at Siorac and Domme is half an hour's drive north and the vineyards of the Lot valley a similar distance south. There are many village suppers/fetes held in the area and night markets at several towns and villages. The Perigord Noir where Marou is situated is celebrated for its wine – the world famous vineyards of St Emilion and Monbazillac are a drive away – its countless bastide towns and chateaux, and a wealth of historic and pre-historic sites – a cradle of European civilization. |
